There is no "Republican movement." There IS a conservative movement and it was, for a time, central to the Republican Party. But the Republican Party has moved away from conservatism and toward some unprincipled mushy middle. Likely 12 years of having power, culminated by absolute power from 2000-2006, convinced the Republican Party that getting reelected mattered more than doing good. As I said to you many years ago (maybe even pre-9/11) I was afraid that Bush was going to set the Republican movement back and whether it’s Bush or not, the Republican movement has been set back. I find it hard to believe anyone could even argue that isn’t a fact.
