Carnival of Maryland – September 23, 2007

September 23rd, 2007 · 6 Comments

Welcome to the September 23, 2007 edition of Carnival of Maryland. It has been a week of firsts for the AbolitionOfMan blog, first time at hosting a carnival, and last weekend I made my first video report: Dispatch from the Peace March in D.C. which I submit to you for this carnival under National Politics.

It was great to read everyone’s posts for the carnival, and I can report that this is quite a diverse group. From Crab Corn Dogs to Gay marriage to butt cleavage. Yes, they all here in the CARNIVAL OF MARYLAND!!!…..(exciting huh). Ok, on you go to the Carnival:

Human Interest

Joyce Dowling has thoughts about Noose reminders and Jena 6 update posted at Race Matters in Prince George’s Co., MD & the USA, reminding us that racism is very much alive in U.S.

Stan Modjesky writes about the Dangerous Legal Territory for Baltimore on legislating butt cleavage over at blogger1947:Everyone is Entitled to My Opinion. Living in Baltimore I know we have a significant butt cleavage problem here, but as Stan points out this is nanny government overreach.

Jon Rochetti presents Not Your Typical Maryland Crab Boil posted at The DC Traveler – Washington DC travel & tourism information, which intrigues me, especially the Crab Corndog served with Old Bay and Crab Roe Remoulade. Crab Corndog…..hmmm no idea how one would do that.

Local Politics

Jeff Quinton at Inside Charm City: Baltimore blogs that Baltimore may join Bloomberg’s NYC straw gun lawsuit. Dixon has already met Mayor Bloomberg to discuss the suit which is being brought against 27 gun dealers which the city claims has sold guns illegally.

The Ridger unloads on the Maryland’s court for blowing the same-sex marriage case at The Greenbelt. Fundamentally The Ridger asks, “would someone please show me how allowing gays to marry would ‘discourage’ opposite-sex marriage, or whatever the opposite of ‘promote’ is?”

Going to the Matt, reports on Frederick County Sheriff Getting Authority to enforce immigration laws. As Matt Johnston rightly says, “Kudos to Sheriff Jenkins for taking seriously an issue that much of the rest of state doesn’t’ seem to care much about.”

tkc interprets the message Maryland is sending to rich people over at The Pubcrawler, which is summed up by the famous quote: “Take Off You Hosers“. (You know the line from the SCTV’s Great White North. Ok, whatever, I was a SCTV fan.)

National Politics

Over at monoblogue Michael Swartz says So long, to Delmarva Democrats. It seems the Democratic party has finally given up on trying to bring those good old southern white males back into their party. Which is fine with Michael, because out in Wicomico county, well there’s a good deal of that type if we gage it by NASCAR paraphernalia.

Dave, (that is me), here at Abolitionofman, spent the weekend covering the Peace March in D.C. I was surprised to report that the right has its moonbats too. I know because I was standing next to one for the entire march, that is until he got arrested for slapping a Code-Pink girl. (No I didn’t get that on video, unfortunately.) The day was well worth it though, if not just to hear the Gold Star moms and dads tell their son’s and daughter’s heroic stories. You couldn’t listen without wiping away tears.

Other

C. Dowd is completely frustrated with Lansdowne crime and is sick of it. Me too! I’m not one of the Domino’s delivery guys being robbed in front of C. Dowd’s house, but I have been on wrong side of gun as a robbery victim. I guess this is such a common event here in Baltimore, that the police didn’t even bothered to come out to take my report that night. But seeing the great drawings over at C. Dowd: Artist and Provocateur, perhaps I could get police sketch of my perps from the resident artist. Ok, they were wearing baggy shorts, with significant butt cleavage, (This was before it was illegal have you), and white t-shorts, about 16 years old….ok that describes a good part of b-more.

Science and Environment

John highlights how Climate Change hits Close to Home over at A DC Birding Blog. The bad news is the Blackwater NWR is disappearing due to the melting of the polar ice, but the good news it wont completely disappear till 2030 so you have plenty of time to still visit. And seeing the pictures John links too, its definitely worth one. Really spectacularly beautiful. I’m ashamed I’m a lifelong Maryland resident and never have been there. I will fix this too.

The Ridger has some great photo’s up with the them: Light Comes over at The Greenbelt.

Sports

Kevin E. Dayhoff has great post on Herb Ruby and the Dedication of Ruby Field I like this line, “As a community builder, sports teams and sporting events are a great democratizer. It’s folks from all walks in life and fellow community members that you wouldn’t meet if it weren’t for sports It’s hot dogs and French fires, family and good friends and you can get in touch with your feelings and scream to your heart’s content. Call it family primal scream therapy.”

Wow, I have a new justification for the inordinate amount of money and time I spend at Ravens games, Scream Therapy. Love it. Thank you. Oh if you wondering who Herb Ruby is, I’ll leave it to you to go over to Soundtrack Division of Old Silent Movies and find out for yourself. He’s not Jack’s brother.

State Politics

Soccer Dad tells us Horses are fleeing Maryland. No, not because they are in Gov. O’Mally’s new tax bracket, but because they can’t get the good purses here. (or handbags. da-dum-dum. Sorry its late) No Soccer Dad points out what Ehrlich tried to argue under his governorship, that the Maryland horse industry can not survive without slots. I’m not a big fan of slots myself, but my mom loves them, and if they in anyway can revitalize that dump down there on Northern Parkway I say go for it. I mean who are we kidding, the state has been involved in legal gambling since the lottery was formed.

Wade Crodhil reveals the O’Malley Tax Plan=Shell Game. But I wouldn’t really describe it as shell game per se, its pretty upfront state sanctioned robbery. The one that gets me is the proposed gas tax hike. Who has the gall to propose even a one cent raise in the gas prices, when consumers have to digest $50 a tank prices. O’Malley does I guess. Unbelievable. Read about over at Politics, Hon..

streiff profiles Our Pander-and-Chief himself with this missile, Water is Wet, Fire is Hot over at Red Maryland. O’Malley’s not pandering for money have you, (he’s just confiscating that), but he is pandering on the gay marriage issue. It’s hard to see how one can be on both sides of that one, but our band leader finds a way.

That concludes this edition. Submit your blog article to the next edition of carnival of maryland using our carnival submission form. Past posts and future hosts can be found on our blog carnival index page.

    Very nicely done.

And of course, many thanks for the inclusion.

I’m also not 100% behind slots.
