Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band are hitting the road again with a tour next month and a new studio album on October 2nd. In years past this would have been the entertainment highlight of my year. But over the past 5 years Bruce has lost my support and a great deal of respect from me and many who support the Defense of the West that we espouse here at abolitionofman.com
David and I (and many of our closest friends, for that matter) have debated Bruce and his political views many times over recent years. It took some time for me to come to terms with my feelings, but I have no intention of buying his new album or attending his latest concert tour. It’s disappointing for me. But it’s the right decision. He’s lost his connection to me.
So before you go out and buy tickets or buy the album, remember the following few moments in the Bruce experience:
Saturday, September 13th – Bruce calls for the IMPEACHMENT of President Bush on stage in Washington DC. David and I were there and it was the beginning of the end for us and Bruce. Impeachment talk seems to have become much more common in America over recent years with the Democratic congress in place. But it’s still a completely ridiculous notion.
June 2004 – On his website, Bruce posts the text of Al Gore’s “He betrayed this country” rant against President Bush. Bruce posted the speech with the following intro: “A few weeks ago at N.Y.U. Al Gore gave one of the most important speeches I’ve heard in a long time . . . It’s my PLEASURE to reprint it here for my fans.”
Here’s the “money quote” for me from an NBC interview with Bruce: responding to a question about impeaching president Bush, he responded with the following: “I don’t even think that’s politics anymore, that’s just common sense.”
Anyway the list of idiotic statements could go on and on. Here’s a good article on the topic.
Bruce has every right to spew his thoughts into the media. I have every right to not spend a dime on him again. As do all of us. I’m not advocating that you must follow my lead, but at least take this post into consideration before you decide.
